Some things change, some things stay the same
Shannon Hartwig reflects on her time as Executive Director of WCK
WCK was born around kitchen tables over bowls of soup, and while drinking bottomless cups of coffee in bustling cafes. Those of us who were in the beginning conversations knew that change was possible, and ultimately, it wasn’t about us. It was about families.
I knew we could get this thing off the ground and hopefully change the landscape of support for children with cancer and blood disorders in our province for good. It was about creating sustainable, practical support to make life easier for families. I am so incredibly grateful and proud of the people I have had the privilege to work alongside to grow WCK into what it is today. Our staff, board, volunteers, and partners believe wholeheartedly in what WCK does and stands for.
As I say farewell to my role as Executive Director, the WCK staff team are carrying on the essential work we do. We will continue to feed and nourish families when they need it most, connect kids with unforgettable moments of play and laughter, sew Port Shirts to make treatment more comfortable, and offer resources and support to parents. This community is rich with people who care deeply about every family navigating the most challenging times.
The WCK Board is actively and fully engaged in finding the next Executive Director to guide, inspire, and shepherd this incredibly special community into the next stages of growth. To maintain support for families and keep operations running, two staff members have stepped into new roles. Alice Cheung has taken on the role of Operations Manager, and Hannah Lind is taking on an interim role as Communications and Development Manager. Our committed Board Members continue to support operations and organizational oversight during this time of transition.
WCK will continue to grow, evolve, and respond as we build a strong and supportive community for families. I’m so excited to see how this team will carry the vision forward with new, innovative ways to provide vital support in the years to come. What will remain the same is our commitment to listen to families, respond with care, and challenge the status quo of support available to moms, dads, kids, and young people navigating the life-altering reality of childhood cancer and blood disorders.
