Meet some WCK volunteers!

You know the saying "It takes a village?" Meet some of the wonderful WCK volunteers who make up a whole village of support for families navigating childhood cancer and blood disorders.

Meet Zoe, Poppa, and Cathie – three volunteers who all play different roles at WCK!

How long have you volunteered with WCK?

What do you do?

Zoe's role couldn't fit onto one piece of paper! She has befriended kids at City Camp, been an online Hangouts Buddy, she helps to blend the fresh smoothies for Smoothie Sundays at the hospital, and many other miscellaneous roles like running a WCK stand at Hockey Fights Cancer night.

Cathie: When WCK was at the old offices, I would pick up smoothie ingredients from there, buy other ingredients, make smoothies in the hospital, deliver them to the nurses station, talk to families about WCK, and once a month we did a deep clean of the lounge.

I have helped with set up and tear down of the arts & crafts area of camp. I was Kelsey's gopher during camp if she needed someone to go out and grab something last minute. I have purchased the food and prepped it throughout camp, and organized and labeled all the arts & crafts and medical bins and bought the drawer towers with money donated by family and friends. They are not the greatest but they do the job (the towers, not the family and friends!)

I organized PJs into bins and worked on PJs with a Purpose, getting in touch with every school in B.C. and suggesting the wording and layout for the corresponding letters. I have been at PJ wrapping parties and have delivered PJs to families. Of course all of this is usually with other people and I have wonderful friends who have helped out. In general I like to be behind the scenes helping out with what I can.

Poppa serves as a pickup driver for WCK's food programs, picking up different foods and supplies that are vital to the smooth running of the programs.

Each role is so important!

Why did you want to volunteer?

Zoe: I started volunteering in 2022 as a work experience student for summer City Camp. After having such an amazing time at camp, I knew I wanted to continue to volunteer with WCK.

Share a fun fact about yourself!

What do you get out of volunteering?

Zoe: I love being able to make the kids happy by making them a smoothie, or just joking around with them at camp. We all need a little more smiles and laughter in our lives!

WCK volunteers are awesome

Here are some more blogs where you can get to know them even better. WCK programming is only possible because of this village of people who want to do all sorts of things, little and big, that make a difference for families.

WCK has all different kinds of volunteers

Some people love to get stuck into activities with the kids. Others prefer to be behind the scenes. There are so many different ways to help.
